Common mobile audio problems (and how to fix them)
Phone-recorded audios (WhatsApp, Telegram, or a voice recorder) often come as OPUS, AMR, M4A, WAV, or 3GP. If they won’t play, are too quiet, or too large, the most reliable fix is to convert to MP3, adjust volume, and, if needed, recompress.

Quick fixes
Problem | Common cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
Won’t play | Unsupported format (OPUS/AMR/M4A) | Convert to MP3 |
Very low volume | Quiet recording or noise | Lighter MP3 & normalize |
File too large | High bitrate or WAV | Lower bitrate (MP3 → MP3) |
Corrupted file | Interrupted download/transfer | Resend/download again |
1) The audio can’t be played
WhatsApp and Telegram use .opus
(and .amr
for older notes); iPhone often uses .m4a
.
For universal compatibility, convert to MP3:
2) The audio is very quiet
Convert to MP3 and then apply normalization/amplification. You can recompress and boost volume in one step with:
👉 Lighter MP3 converter (MP3 → MP3)
3) The file is too large
If it comes from WAV or a high-bitrate MP3, recompress to 64–128 kbps for voice (or 128–160 if there’s background music).
4) Corrupted or incomplete file
This often happens after interrupted downloads. Try resending from the original app or downloading again on your PC. If you need to extract it first:
5) Open on another device (PC, car, iPhone/Android)
If an audio works on one device but not another, it’s almost always the format. Convert to MP3 or check these guides:
